It was with great sadness that the DIFC Courts team learned of the passing this week of our esteemed former colleague, Sir Anthony Colman.
In the five years he spent with us, first as a Judge and later as Deputy Chief Justice, Sir Anthony played a pivotal role in developing the jurisprudence that continues to underpin the workings of our Courts today. Sir Anthony was also at the forefront of the Court’s efforts to encourage alternative dispute resolution/mediation and for parties to attempt to explore settlement options.
Indeed, Sir Anthony’s judgments helped lay the groundwork for the publication in 2017 of the landmark “Commentaries on the DIFC Laws,” the first body of legal analysis produced in the Middle East of English-language common law.
Without question, the achievements of the DIFC Courts over the last decade would not have been possible without the enormous contributions by Sir Anthony Colman. He earned the trust and respect of those who appeared before him, and the admiration and appreciation of all those who worked alongside him.
Sir Anthony Colman will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue through the work of the DIFC Courts that he was so instrumental in establishing.
