Leading Speakers Provide Insight into Enforcement of Orders, Judgments and Arbitral Awards at DIFC Courts’ Seminar

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 21 June 2009: The DIFC Courts, the Dubai International Financial Centre’s (DIFC) landmark independent, common-law judicial system, presented the third seminar in its Practitioners’ Lecture Series last week. The educational session focused on the enforcement of orders, judgments and arbitral awards of both the DIFC Courts and the DIFC-LCIA Arbitration Centre, a subject which proved popular as the seminar was well attended by a mix of UAE-based in-house legal counsels and lawyers. Discussion included a review of international best practice for the enforcement of judgments, orders and arbitral awards. Speakers included, H.E. Justice Omar Al Muhairi, Judge at the DIFC Courts, Tom Montagu-Smith, Barrister at 24 Old Buildings and Joseph Huse, Registrar at DIFC-LCIA Arbitration Centre, each referred to their relevant experiences in individual presentations at the lecture. All speakers reinforced the world class nature of enforcement through the DIFC Courts and the close ties between the DIFC Courts and the Dubai Courts. An open forum session at the end of the event facilitated a discussion with the speakers and the DIFC Courts’ Chief Justice Sir Anthony Evans.

The lecture is part of a series designed specifically for legal professionals with the intention of providing knowledge on handling litigation through the DIFC Courts.

Mark Beer, Registrar at DIFC Courts said: “We have been pleased with the feedback from the first two lectures in the series. Lawyers in the UAE are finding that the seminars offer clear guidance on dealing with cases before the DIFC Courts.

“The DIFC Courts is focused on developing the understanding of court processes and procedures among legal practitioners and in providing the highest standards of justice. The global institutions operating within the DIFC expect the highest international standards of legal procedure. Efforts such as the lecture series, our proposed professional code of conduct and the DIFC Courts – Dubai Courts protocol of enforcement are vital in achieving this.”
